US Senator Bernie Sanders called on OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei and Meta Platforms, Inc. (META.US) CEO Mark Zuckerberg to hit brake on AI development, warning that the technology has reached a critical tipping point and could pose catastrophic risks if left unchecked.

Sanders said he had sent letters to the three tech giants urging them to honor their commitments and stop further AI development.

He also claimed that AI has been used for the first time in history to create a new virus, raising concerns that if such developments fall into the wrong hands, new biological weapons capable of killing tens of millions of people could be developed.
